Around Abia, Nigeria, oil palms sprout by themselves in farms, compounds and refuse dumps, and many grow into bearing trees. Ngwa land clearly meets the soil requirements for the oil palm tree. This page sets out those requirements, so growers anywhere can judge their own soil before planting.
In my hometown in Nigeria, the first heavy rains bring a flush of ripe bunches, and harvests stay strong from April to August. That rhythm shows how closely the climate requirements of the oil palm tree decide every harvest. This page sets out those requirements, using published data and what I have seen.
In my hometown in Abia State, Nigeria, where I grew up, almost nobody germinates palm seeds by hand. The top palm oil producers in the world are Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Indonesia grew about 57 percent of the world’s palm oil in 2025/26, and Malaysia about 25 percent. Together, those two countries produced over four-fifths of global supply that year.
As children in Abia, Nigeria, we chewed raw palm fruit, roasted it in the fire, and ate it sweet and hot. When a palm fell in the wind, we cracked its young kernels, white and milky. Every part of the oil palm fruit had a use before I learned its anatomy.
